How to hear the voice of God
Unlike other mainstream religions, Christianity introduces the concept that each person who has accepted Jesus as their saviour, can “hear the voice of God” and have an intimate personnel relationship with God.
In some religions this is seemed impossible, as “God” is so far away and he is not interested in the mere trivialities of a human. Yet, it is Christianity that emphasises the uniqueness of the individual.
Jesus said, “my sheep hear my voice”.
When I first became a Christian I could not imagine that the God of the entire universe would or could communicate with me. One day I had a dream and I knew God was trying to communicate with this Kiwi guy, of all people.
I was not an important person, academically high, nor rich but still I knew I had received a message from the Almighty. It was a bit … “out there”.
My first dream was from the Old testament stuff. I could not get anyone to interpret it. I new it was powerful as in it I saw how God saw people. It was the absolute truth about them and me. I perceived for the first time that God sees things, events, people and opportunities differently to we see. He sees through the eye of absolute truth, love and faith, whereas we see through our natural understanding.
Then God spoke to me for the first time. I was on a bed and I said, “I love you Jesus”. A voice spoke to me and said, “Yes, and I am the good shepherd”. I knew then that God is listening to every word we say and weighing them in the balance.
God wants to talk to you. Why? Because he wants to become your best friend in life and lead you on the best path. He is intimately concerned about you and only wants the best for you, your family and your friends.
God talks through various channels:
1 When we read the Bible
2 Dreams
3 Visions
4 The inner voice
5 Through others – especially those who are anointed to preach and teach the word of God
6 Talking to you in your sleep
7 Speaking in tongues and receiving the interpretation
8 An audible voice
9 A word of wisdom
10 A word of knowledge
11 Personal prophecy
I have heard God speak personally to me in most of these ways. Each time it is amazing. Even after 40 years, every time he talks to me it is as thrilling and exciting as ever.
You should start your journey and start reading the Bible and praying. Just close your eyes and talk to Jesus. You will feel the presence of God in your room. After a while open the bible again, start reading and ask God to speak to you. Anticipate Him to talk to you.
It is great as well to get into the practice of “waiting upon the Lord”.
This involves you sitting still, comfortable. Just close your eyes and don’t say anything. Simply bask in the presence of God. Sometimes you say small sentences about how you are blessed, how He is with you, etc.
I myself try to spend time like this every morning. It gives me strength, peace, and quietens me down to be able to receive a word from God.
When I first became a Christian, God gave me a dream – the whole sky was pitch black with just a little bit of light shining through. Gradually the darkness became less and less. The sky became brighter and brighter. Then there was only a beautiful clear blue sky and a small pair of lips made from two clouds. I knew that eventually my life would be okay and I would one day hear the voice of God clearly. As it happened. Now God mostly speaks to me in a voice when I sleep at night. He has by his grace and love for me spoken to me this way hundreds if not thousands of times.
Each time he does, I receive a touch from the Holy Spirit. Each time the words are amazing. Sometimes He speaks about large events, sometimes small events or things that are about to happen, even warnings. Or, how much he loves me and how great I am in His sight. This way of communication for me has been tried and tested over decades and has been possibly the greatest blessing I have received from God. It never ceases to amaze me. He is always so positive, faith building and encouraging. With God anything is possible.
Through speaking with you, God can turn any situation around in your life. There is no situation that cannot be healed or restored. You only have to read the Bible and see some of His mighty acts of deliverance He has done for those who “waited upon Him”.
Urim and Thummin
In the old testament the high priest was given the Urim and the Thummin. These were two stones put in the breastplate that the High Priest in the Old Testament wore. They mean “lights and perfection” and were used to determine the will of God.
We as Christians have the Urim and Thumin – we have the Word and the Spirit.
When we need to know God’s will about a certain situation, we can ask the Lord and he will show us God’s will.
God wants to talk to us, prosper us, and make us a blessing to others.
When we have a certain need and we seek God’s guidance, we then ask the Lord, open the Bible and start reading. The Lord will give you a Rhema which is a Word from God.
This Word will really stick out to you. You will know this is the Lord talking to you.
The Bible says, “faith cometh by hearing and hearing by a word from God”. The word the Lord speaks to you will contain one element, and that will be faith.
Faith allows us to interpret scripture and do exploits for Christ that we could not, nor attempt to do, in our own strength. Yet, when we have the Word of God we will be successful.
In the bible Jesus told people to do unusual things and great things happened. He told the disciples to wait in an upper room after he was risen from the dead. They did, and were all filled with the Holy Ghost. They turned the world upside down.
If you feel God is telling you something, He will give you the witness of the Spirit. This is an inner feeling of peace that will accompany the word of God.
Remember, when God gives you revelation, the golden rules will always be that you will love God more, and want to go to church more.
This guidance can also come by God talking to you directly into your spirit, or by dreams and visions.
God may allow someone to prophecy over you to confirm the guidance that you are receiving, or you can talk it over with someone you trust in the Lord.
Guidance from the Lord comes with experience. If you need clear direction then it is good to do a one day or three day fast. This will help you clarify the will of God.
Remember, God is not the author of confusion. When he guides you He will give you that feeling of absolute peace in your heart, even if it is a real step of faith.
